Cruisin’ With Moon Taxi

Moon Taxi, an indie rock band from Nashville, Tennessee, is performing at Chicago’s The House of Blues this Friday, October 17. Even with their busy, nonstop touring schedule, I was lucky enough to have a conversation with the lead singer of the band Trevor Terndrup last Friday.

Last week, I was able to speak with Trevor Terndrup, the lead singer of the band Moon Taxi. We discussed the band’s latest album “Mountains Beaches Cities”, some of the band’s influences, and their origins.

Moon Taxi formed quite a few years ago, but started to gain more attention recently after the release of their newest album in 2013. The band’s been very busy since then. They’ve been on Conan, Letterman, and even performed at the music festival Bonaroo. They’ve also been busy touring since late August. Many people commented that while listening to the album “Mountains Beaches Cities”, you get the feeling of being on a voyage or journey, especially with their hit song “Morocco”. Trevor says that this is precisely what that the band was going for.

This is our lives. It’s about the idea of exploring a far beyond place. You might not get there, but you still have to urge to go there.”

Over the years, Moon Taxi’s musical style has changed quite a but. Trevor explained that this is because the band is continuously growing as musicians and is always trying to challenge themselves. Out of the songs he’s written so far, Trevor states that the song “Young Journey” holds a special place in his heart. He states that,

Some songs take a while, but Young Journey was one of those songs that just happened naturally.

One thing that I was surprised to learn was some of Trevor’s musical influences. You wouldn’t have guessed from listening to Moon Taxi’s songs, but Trevor said that he grew up listening to a lot of rock such as Sublime and The Grateful Dead. His guitar playing was influenced by Jimi Hendrix and he self-taught himself the instrument (his first instrument was the trumpet!). Each of the band members come from some sort of musical background and share an incredible love for music.

If you haven’t already, check out Moon Taxi’s album “Mountains Beaches Cities” and their newest release, “Live from Austin EP”. Tickets are still available online for the show on Friday, October 17 at The House of Blues. Be sure to pick up yours today! I’ve heard that concert goers can look forward to listening to a new song or two. Hope to see you all there! 🙂
