It must be noted that Ghostface Killah is, hands down, my favorite rapper out of the Wu Tang Clan, so it’s natural that I get excited whenever he puts out new music. Just before 2014 ended, Ghostface dropped 36 Seasons, an album that he pretty much announced out of no where. To add to that, he announced a collaboration album a while ago with the hip hop/jazz trio from Toronto, BadBadNotGood. Sour Soul is due to be released on the 24th of February. Now, 36 Seasons was a strong album from Ghostface, so to have another album on the way shortly is amazing. The fact that he’s collaborating with a band that I love is also awesome as well.
We’ve already been treated to two tracks from this upcoming LP. “Six Degrees“, a song that had a guest feature from Danny Brown leaked back in June and “Gunshowers” which featured Elzhi came out back in October. It was interesting to see how the combination of a band and Ghostface would sound, but it was clear on these two tracks that this new partnership was meant to be. BadBadNotGood compliment Ghostface as well as the RZA’s production did back in the Wu Tang’s glory days.
BadBadNotGood definitely kept things simple on the first two songs of this collaboration, but on “Ray Gun” they opt for a faster and funkier instrumental which Ghostface Killah and DOOM both spit on excellently. The reat thing about this new track is that it’s a preview for yet another collaboration album that Ghostface Killah has in the works, this one being with DOOM. They sounded great together on The Mouse and the Mask back in 2005 and they both really went in on this new song. Hopefully that collaboration turns out to be true. It seems as though 2015 is going to be a really busy year for Ghostface Killah.
But in the meantime, stream “Ray Gun” below.
