This Thursday Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Inc. will have the honor of welcoming 5 of Chicago’s best latino rappers to UIC’s campus, for the event “Latinos in Hip-Hop”. During this time the rappers will touch on multiple topics such as being latino in the rap game, how they started rapping, and much more. The event will also be open to the public starting at 5:30 pm in Student Center East, Room 613. However, The purpose of this blog is to highlight the rappers even further and get you more accustomed to their music in anticipation for thursday. See You There!
Visual a Chicago rapper from the Northside has been in the game for a minute putting out dope projects. Along with this, he also gives back to the community running after school programs in Pilsen for kids interested music. He also does a variety of other things related to music around the city, including a weekly hip-hop show on wednesdays at the Subterranean in Wicker Park. My favorite music video by him entitled “The Dream is Free” as him and the legendary MC Juice both snap on the track. On top of this, a more recent track by him and rapper Ill Brown from is below that I think is dope. Check it Out!
Esohel has been putting work in the rap game for years. Currently, he released a great project earlier this year entitled Dopamine that is worth checking out, in fact one of my favorite songs I highlighted below. Esohel’s flow & delivery are what makes him stand out in opinion from a lot of rapper to me. Another added bonus below is one of my favorite music video by him entitled “Silence is golden” alongside the rapper Add-2.
Phero, who was born and resides on the southside, is one of Chicago’s youngest rising hip-hop stars. At only in his early 20’s Phero has already headlined numerous festivals, toured europe, and more. Along with this he constantly gives back to the community of Pilsen as he strives to inspire others to help them accomplish their dreams. Below is a dope music video by him entitled “I” and one of my favorite songs by him entitled “Awake”. Look out for his mixtape coming out later this year as it is sure to the Chicago hip-hop scene by storm.
Navarro (F.K.A. Scheme)
Navarro formally known as Scheme has also been putting in work in the rap game for a minute. The most interesting part of Navarro in my opinion is that he is one of the latino rappers that uses his bilingual skill in rap, by rapping both in spanish and english at times. Aside from rap, Navarro recently accepted an offer to be the director of The Autism Hero Project, as he gives back to that community in a big way. He also released a great project this year called “A Pocket Full of Pesos” which you can listen to below and as well as a throwback track by him named “The Sun Is Out” that is one of my favorites.
Chandler of Beach Jesus
Since the beginning of this year Chandler formed a group called Beach Jesus. They consist of two vocalist him and an artist named Jommis, along with two producers Jarofmy and SEER. Since January they’ve released an EP called The Prelude and they released their debut album “Two Weeks Vacation” in June. They are also currently working on another EP with plans to release it in November. Look out for this group as they seem to be in the next powerhouse to come out of the city. Check out their dope debut album below.
Also come out to the Latino’s in Hip-Hop event this thursday! 5:30 PM. Student Center East. Room 613. See you there!
