As a music fan and even bigger fan of: Green Day, Simple Plan, Kid Cudi, J.Cole, and Chance the Rapper, 2016 has been a good music year for me. Almost perfect.
After 5 years since their last album, Get Your Heart On! & 3 years since releasing their EP, Get Your Heart On! The Second Coming, Simple Plan released their 5th studio album in February 2016: Taking One For The Team. I might be a bit bias because I’m clearly obsessed with this band but I think the album is amazing, it sounds like a mixture of all of their previous albums. I got to experience these songs live at their Chicago concert back in October at the House of Blues. My first blog post was all about them and the concert. (See I’m obsessed)
Favorite songs on album: “I Refuse”, “Boom”, “Singing in the Rain”, and “I Don’t Wanna Be Sad”
If you’re from Chicago and like hip-hop/rap and aren’t a Chance the Rapper fan, I have one question: Why? Seriously, why? I need an essay on why you aren’t a Chance fan with at least 3 valid reasons. After his mixtapes, 10 day and Acid Rap, I think a lot of people were wondering what his next project would sound like and he did not disappoint. Coloring book dropped in May.
Favorite songs on album: “Mixtape”, “No Problem”, “Juke Jam” and “Angels”
Similar to Simple Plan, Green Day took years to release a new album because of personal and family problems. They hadn’t released an album since 2012 when their Uno! Dos! Tre! albums were released. I last saw them in 2013 at Allstate Arena where I waited for about an hour outside by their bus, a gate blocking me, my brother, and a couple other fans and I swear Billie Joe Armstrong waved at me. Anyways, they released Revolution Radio in October. This album has the same political angst as American Idiot but let’s not compare albums because this one is as unique as their other 12 studio albums.
Favorite songs on album: “Outlaws”, “Still Breathing”, and “Revolution Radio”
The last album Kid Cudi released was Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven in December 2015. He received a lot of criticism for this project from the media, and even some of his fans. It was definitely different but personally I loved it. Fans knew Kid Cudi had a rock side when WZRD (2012) was released and although Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven was a bit darker, and included no rapping or even a sign of rap, I still enjoyed it. It reminded me of the reasons why I fell in love with rock in the first place. For me, it was my favorite artist, (Kid Cudi) experimenting with my favorite genre of music. I saw him live for the fourth time in February at the Riviera Theatre where he performed some songs from the album and met him after the concert. *insert tears*
Months later he tweeted that he would be releasing 2 albums in 2016 and there would be two tours, he went on to release two singles, “Frequency” and “Surfin’” His sixth studio album, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ was scheduled to release on September 30th, however he postponed it, and about a month later checked himself into rehab for depression. Earlier today he tweeted the release date for Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’. Cudderisback.

Everyone was worried about finding Frank Ocean, But where has J.Cole been? The last time we heard from J.Cole was in 2014 when 2014 Forest Hills Drive was released. An album that went double platinum with no features, just saying. It’s been about a year since Revenge of the Dreamers 2 and “Black Friday” by Kendrick and J.Cole was released. J.Cole rapped at the end of the song, “But this February, bet shit get scary when I fuck around and drop…” that line got every J.Cole fan pumped for February.
But February came and went, along with March, then the summer and fall and there I was still waiting impatiently for a new J.Cole album that would blow our minds. When he announced at a concert that he wouldn’t be touring for a long time, all I could think was how thankful I was that I got to watch him perform at Lollapalooza this past summer. This past year I listened to everything from The Warm Up, Sideline Story and his most recent projects 2014 Forest Hills Drive, and Revenge of the Dreamers 2. But hopefully the rumors are true and we won’t be waiting much longer for J.Cole to destroy Trump in one verse, and to deliver more awakening songs like “Be Free.”
