Flatbush Zombies are about to drop their very anticipated second studio album in April 16th, “VACATION IN HELL.” Today they released a single from their upcoming album called “Headstone.” The Flatbush Zombies never disappoint in the music they make. The group consists of Erick Arc Elliot who’s the producer of the group and also raps, Zombie Juice who’s voice is higher pitched and Meechy Darko who has a very raspy voice.
The song is very dark and gritty and is an ode to deceased rappers and to rappers who’ve lost their popularity over the years. There are various references to classic 80s-90s rap songs, album, artists and other things; for example, the movie Reservoir Dogs in the line, “Reservoir Dogs, check the scar, ignorant sh*t” by Erick Arc Elliot. Juice says, “Young don, Cartagena, excuse my demeanor, this the glamour life. You still not a player, you ain’t half as nice” which is referencing Fat Joe’s album Don Cartagena, and Big Pun’s song “Still Not A Player.” My favorite line comes from Meechy Darko, “21 questions, like who shot ya? I shot ya!” which is a reference to 50 Cent’s song “21 Questions” and Biggie’s song “Who Shot Ya?”
I’m very excited for their new album, and their tour with Nyck Caution and Kirk Knight who are part of their bigger collective known as the Beast Coast. This New York trio is out to prove that they are the best rap group out right now, which I firmly believe they are. They are also there to bring back New York Hip-Hop to the forefront again. The Flatbush Zombies are one of the most talented rap groups and are heavily underrated, and cannot recommend them enough. They have their first album 3001: A Laced Odyssey. They also have their mixtapes, D.R.U.G.S. and BetterOffDead. Additionally, their collaborative EP with the Underachievers, Clockwork Indigo. They are definitely worth checking out.
