Third eye: Opened. Chakras: Aligned. Just: Water. After waiting for this day to happen since Never Say Never, I finally got to see Jaden Smith perform live.
I took a lyft to Lincoln Hall around 11 a.m. , made small talk with the driver:
“Who are you seeing tonight?”
“The karate kid??”
“So .. uhhh what are you going to watch him do exactly????”
“… um .. perform his music, he raps…lol.”
“The karate kid raps??….I don’t like it.”
I arrived to the venue and met up with a girl in line who I had met before at other shows in Chicago. It was just us two out there for about an hour, then two other boys showed up. They seemed pretty cool, and they were, so we quickly befriended them.
Another hour passes and this dude pulls up to the venue on his BMX. He’s pretty dope looking, wearing all black with a guitar on his back. He asked who we were seeing and we tell him. For the first time all day, someone wasn’t surprised to hear that Will Smith’s son makes music, in fact, BMX dude was actually pretty upset because tickets had sold out before he had the chance to grab one.
So now, like I said, BMX dude looked like a hella dope guy. He looked like he could have easily been apart of the band or one of Jaden’s friends.
At this moment one of the boys comes up with a plan.
“Yo just come back in a few hours with your guitar and we’ll act like you’re famous to get you in. We’ll like fan girl and ask for pictures. Say you’re in Brockhampton.”
There’s like 50 members of Brockhampton, the security guards would never know. You could point to a water bottle and be like “yo that’s brockhampton,” and everyone would be like “oh yeah, truuuu.”
“Yooo, I think this could work. My name is Ryan Salmon so like just freak out and this could work.”
Ryan Salmon rides off, the plan truly seems awful, but we roll with it.
The four of us are still waiting outside the venue when the tour buses arrive. Tyler Cole walks out and heads towards the venue. My friends and I were quacking because I mean… it’s Tyler Cole. We shyly say hi and he says hi back. We wanted a picture but I was too scared to ask.
The thing about Jaden Smith, Tyler Cole, and everyone that’s apart of the MSFTSrep crew is that they’re all so….smart. The way they view life and express themselves artistically is beyond inspiring (also intimidating) and I t h r i v e to be on the same plane as them someday.
So one of the boys I’m with speaks up for me and asks Tyler if we can get pictures. Tyler very kindly says yes and he stays outside to talk with us for a few minutes. He truly is the kindest person.
Killing some more time in line — there’s still five more hours till the doors open. A photographer appears. He takes pictures for Highsnobiety. He asks if he can take some pictures of my friends and I since we’re you’re stereotypical Street-Fashioned-Flower-Boy-Lovin-eDgY-Checkered-Vans-Teenz.
With absolutely zero surprise, the picture I was in did not make the final cut into the article, but my friends did. Highsnobiety welcome to your tape. Once I lose 50 pounds and increase my monthly income it’s over for all you edgy btchs.
There’s about an hour now till doors open. Ryan Salmon, the fifteenth member of brockhampton, comes back to the venue looking fly as ever with his guitar. Everyone in the front of the line starts freaking out.
“Holy Sht it’s Ryan Salmon!!”
“Ryan from Brockhampton!”
“Yo Ryan can we can get a picture???”
Really just gassing him up.
“Aw thanks you guys, but I gotta get going inside to set my stuff up!”
The two security guards by the door look a bit confused.
“Uh where you going?”
“Yo that’s RYAN SALMON of BROCKHAMPTON,” my friend chimes in
“Yeah I’m here to play for the show tonight…”
The two security guards look at eachother. They look at Ryan Salmon. They look at eachother again.
“Ok you’re good.”
And they let Ryan Salmon into the venue. They let ryan salmon into the venue. tHey LeT RYaN SaLmOn of BrOcKhamPtOn iNto THE vENUE.
Ryan Salmon, being the god that he is, makes it all the way up to the green room. He’s even given a wristband for his credentials. He gets backstage. He’s living, truly thriving. God Bless Ryan Salmon.
Unfortunately, some people who were actually a part of the band start questioning Ryan Salmon of Brockhampton’s existence. They discrover that Ryan Salmon has just been a good looking dude with a guitar this whole time. Ryan Salmon gets his creditals taken away and is sadly kicked out of the venue.
Moral of the story… if you ever need to get anywhere in life…. just say you’re in Brockhampton. Nobody will ever know the difference.
So now let’s talk about the Vision Tour itself:
After waiting in life for eight hours, my friends and I got barricade. Lincoln Hall is a super small venue but it filled up quick. Everyone there was edgy and scary looking.
Ian Frequncy: 7.5/10
Next on the set was Tyler Cole. The Legend. The Legend. Tyler put his whole heart and soul into his performance. He’s one of those artist that you can tell just by looking at him that he truly is passionate about creating art and music. Words cannot do his set justice, you just have to check him out yourself.
Tyler Cole: 15/10
After Tyler Cole was ¿Téo? As I said before, I f with anyone that’s apart of MSFTS, so I was super into ¿Téo? too. He knew how to hype up a crowd and he’s from Colombia which is my third favorite country…so…yeah.
Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for……Jaden Smith. Jaden. Smith. Jaden Smith. My boyfriend…..my future husband…..
Odessa…watch your back girl im coming for your man…
(Odessa if you’re reading this im kidding and im sorry, you are very very pretty and probably a lot smarter than i am and could easily destroy my life.)
As soon as Jaden appeared on stage, I was immediately crushed against the barricade by literally every single human in the venue. I have attended many GA shows in my life, but this one….was… intense.
Jaden kept the crowd insanely hyped the entire time. His vocals were powerful. His dance moves were everything. His moonwalk was everything. Everytime we made eye contact I felt my third eye open more and more. The visuals were stunning. His artistic ability was mind blowing.
He played everything off of SYRE including an unreleased track. The boy truly is an icon living. By the time the show finished, my body was completely bruised and my voice was gone. I regret nothing.
Jaden Smith : 20/10
The Vision Tour: 10/10
My friends and I hung outside of the venue for a while after the show ended. It was the first night in Chicago that felt like summer, and we were enjoying it. As we were sitting out there, Ian Frequency walked out. One of my friends asked if he could get a picture with him and he said yes, so we walked over to the tour bus with him.
While my friend was talking to Ian, Tyler Cole came out of the bus. Tyler, being the kind soul he is, ended up staying outside to talk to my friend and I for a solid hour.
These past few months have been a serious struggle for me to stay motivated in music. Talking to Tyler about creating and about life and everything in between inspired me more than ever to keep going with it. I’m beyond appreciative of him and I just want to see his work take over the world already. He deserves it. So so so SO much.
I was also given free Just Water. For those who do not know what that is, it’s a brand of water created by the Smith family that comes in bottles made entirely from plants. It’s extremely environmentally friendly and it’s almost $50 for a 24 pack (so it was pretty dope getting it for free). I understand that $50 is a lot for a case of water, but this brand is beyond helpful to our environment so if you can afford to, I highly suggest checking it out.
Jaden is more than just a rapper and more than just Will Smith’s son. He’s making waves and doing all that he can to give back and make the world a better place for everyone. He’s young but he is one of the most intelligent humans out there. Same goes to Tyler Cole. They’re true visionary and y’all…need to get with… The Vision.
