So Black Panther just came out and it was pretty good. Another addition to the canon of the monstrosity that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film managed to set itself apart from the others through its originality, social relevance, and the introduction of a villain that was for once more interesting than a piece of driftwood.

It’s so good in fact that it’s inspired me to start a whole new series of articles called “Like You Care”, a list series where I’ll be ranking some of personal favorite things that will cover everything from movies to music to pasta sauce. One thing to note is that these lists will be tackling my personal favorite entries, and because of my horrifically poor taste, may not always be the best.  Because of the release of Black Panther and boundless originality, the first will cover MCU films. A laundry list of what to do during your winter break

(Above: not shredding the gnar.)

So, the 2017 fall semester is coming to an end. Many of us call Chicago home, while a good group of UIC students think that they are from Chicago but are really from the suburbs (such as myself).

After spending about four months at UIC, it is definitely nice to take a break and come home for the holidays to spend time with family and friends. Winter break officially begins on December 16th, 2017 and ends on January 16th, 2018. You might have some apprehension regarding not knowing what to do during break.

As do I.

Because humans really like to read lists, I have compiled a few things that will hold you over until the spring semester.

1. Get a job, you lazy bum. I recommend the seasonal positions for Mobile Sales Consultants at Best Buy, Cart Attendants at Target, or even working for the Pavilion at UIC. Maybe even sign up to be a lifeguard at your local outdoor waterpark.

2. Go snowboarding and SHRED THE GNAR!!!

23 Unorthodox Ways To Spend Your Thanksgiving Break

And now for something completely different.

Thanksgiving break is a magical time for the students of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Those two long days off that we are granted for this holiest of holidays are for many an opportunity to finally return home after several months of intense studies and reconnect with their families.

This break is also an exciting time for families of freshmen in particular, who get to see that wide eyed and enthusiastic little kid they dropped off at the beginning of the semester return as an unrecognisable bearded freak.

Sometimes though, this break can be very overwhelming to those who want to get the most out of their time away from the shackles of this intellectual prison. The thought of even losing a minute of their finite break shakes them down to their very core.

So, out of the goodness of my heart; I have compiled a list of not one, not two, but 23 unorthodox ways of spending Thanksgiving break. Fair warning though traveler, for some of the items on this list may be seen by some as “purposefully silly” and they “shouldn’t be taken too seriously because they’re jokes”… Continue reading “23 Unorthodox Ways To Spend Your Thanksgiving Break”

Jonah Fights the City Part 2 – Ain’t no love in the Heart of the City

download

After surviving a United Airlines flight, Jonah and his much more likable brother in arms Owen find themselves in the middle of the urban jungle. With vigor in their hearts and easily stealable wallets in their loose pockets, the pair sally forth into the great unknown. Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf the White must travel west in an effort to convince the Rohrrim Tribes to aid the Kingdom of Gondor in the coming war against the dark legions of Sauron.

The ride from the airport to the hotel was the first moment of levity I had had all day. Travel doesn’t really stress me out as much as keep me on my toes. Even during my residency at the airport, all I could think about was how I needed to ensure that the rest of my journey would go smoothly.

Even while on the plane I couldn’t relax, but that was for a number of reasons. Here is a comprehensive list of them.

  1. I, in all of my infinite wisdom and foresight, had forgotten that Spotify did not work well with airplanes. So my ride was going to be a tuneless one right out of the gate.
  2.  I had absolutely no idea how we were going to get from the airport to the hotel. I mean I figured we would just take an Uber, but then there was the question of how many shekels it would cost us.
  3. The couple sitting next to me on the plane were from Australia, which wouldn’t have been a problem if I hadn’t represented New Zealand in Model United Nations club earlier that week. I spent the whole ride praying to Lorde and Peter Jackson that they wouldn’t break my fragile, Kiwi legs.
  4. Once the plane started to descend, my ears found out that I had to cut part of their Christmas bonuses for that year, and decided that the best course of action was to put me through a skull crushingly intense pain.

Overall, three out of five stars.

I turned to Owen, who was taking footage of the rolling cityscape with the camera he had brought with him. I’m sure the rays of sunlight shining through the New York skyline were a very profound sight to behold. I wouldn’t know because I was checking Tinder.

It was at that point that I realized that Owen and I had never actually discussed how our film would do in the competition, so I brought it up. The fest had roughly all of the same categories as the Oscars, like best picture, screenplay, direction, etc. After some discussion, we decided that we had a fighting chance in most of the categories, going so far as to say that actually winning something was not too far off.

Our confidence would not have been as high if it hadn’t been for what had happened a couple weeks earlier. Continue reading “Jonah Fights the City Part 2 – Ain’t no love in the Heart of the City”
